This was another piece I did between topics. I was inspired after my school art trip to Paris. We went to a gallery that showcased the artist 'Akseli Gallen-Kallela'. I did a copy of his work and I really liked the range of colours incorporated in the clothing and the face.
This was a piece I did between topics. It was really to experiment with different materials. This is mainly done using brusho, which allowed the soft tonal change in all water, mountains and sky. However dark recesses were added with a brown felt tip and finally, white paint was added in the water and sky to create a sense of movement.
This is my final piece. I did a batik as it was a media I had never used and was interested in. I think this piece worked well, the colours remain fairly similar in yellow - red - brown tones. I did this as I thought it provided a much more natural palette and linked better with the foetal concept. As it does have some nature reference, the foetal position may be considered as a haven and a state of protection. Batik allowed me to create an abstract piece, while still retaining some detail. The figure in placed in the foreground while the background remains as patterns. I enclosed the figure in a space as shown by the perspective lines, this promotes an sense of entrapment that I liked in a previous piece and the patterns also provide a similar sense of chaos.
This piece was meant to promote contrasting ideas, very similarly to my clown piece and ultimately, it comes down to people's perception of things on how they react to a piece.
This is biro drawing of my own photo. While I think biro allows a dramatic piece due to the dark recesses achieved, it still remains fairly bland. To increase the interest of my piece, I would perhaps work in a different material and create a more abstract background, similar to my previous piece.
This is an etching I did of my own photos. The etching showed the dark recesses of this picture well and helped create a 3D effect. I added a range of colourful swirls in the background as it created a complex and overwhelming border on the image. This was done to show how the foetal position could be considered an entrapment and isolation instead of the usual connotations of protection.
This is another copy of art history. I liked this image as it shows the foetal position in a very nature based way and promotes the sense of protection. I did this in pencil as it allows for a softer tonal range, which works best with the image.
This was the start of my new project. I looked at Da Vinci's drawings and did my own copy using biro. I was happy with as the media and Da Vinci's style complimented each other massively. This piece also inspired me to look more deeply at the foetal position as it intrigued me.
This is my main piece. I decided to use a similar layout as one shown in a previous drawing however, I used acrylic instead as it allowed me to work quickly on a wide scale. It also allowed me to use the palette I thought worked best in my prep. I used black and blues surrounding the eyes as while black provided a good contrast to the pale white faces, it didn't have another depth to be considered as realistic. The red mouths added more interest to the piece and made it eye-catching. In the background I added cards, linking to the 'Joker'.
My thoughts behind this piece came from exploring the different images used in the rest of my work. They all involved the 'unknown'. Masks and make-up cover the true identity of a person. I tried showing this through the contrasting facial expressions shown as people have many different perceptions of clowns. While some consider them as funny, others consider them as their worst fear.
This is another experiment with my own photos, trying to incorporate blues in the face to make the tonal range seem more realistic.
Using my own images, I started working on a larger scale in preparation for my main piece. This is a painting using acrylic that I tried, I thought this worked well and was a powerful image. My favourite area was the mouth as I thought the shading was realistic however to develop this piece further, I decided to work on the eyes.
This was using my own photos again however with a much more abstract layout. I copied one of my images onto a picture of a model as I was interested in contrasting the use of make-up and how it can emphasise people's perfection or distort someone and make them look scary. I focused on both the eyes and mouth in smaller pieces using brusho.
I then started work using my own photos. This is a piece I did using black and red biro. I thought this worked well as it incorporated many of my past ideas into one piece. It achieved the dark recesses needed in the facial features, very similarly to my previous 'Joker' biro drawing, while also having the contrast of colour. I liked the collection of heads as it produced a much more interesting piece.
This is a picture of the character 'Chuckles', who appears in Toy Story 3. I did this as it enabled me to use another material. I used pencil crayons as I thought it related best to the childlike image and it achieved the vibrancy I wanted. I then overlapped the image with lyrics from a song. The phrase 'Tears of A Clown' appears very contradicting and this was something I wanted to explore within my work.
This is another image in the media associated with fear - the 'V for Vendetta' mask. After the use of colour in my Joker piece, I decided to try and explore this, while also using a new media. Pastels allowed me to shade whilst having the palette I wanted however this piece didn't seemed successful to me as the vibrancy I was looking wasn't there.
This was another attempt at the 'Scream' mask but this time in pencil. This create clearer creases in the fabric as   pencil allowed for a more gradual shade. However I still didn't like the simplicity of this. The colour worked well and I decided to perhaps explore the use of colour in my later pieces.
After looking at the Joker, I was interested in how fear was portrayed in the media. Another classic image is the 'Scream' mask. I used block pain in this as it was a material I had yet to try however I wasn't happy with the outcome as it appeared to bland and plain.
I focused on the 'Joker' again however did a more detailed drawing in biro. I was happy with the outcome as the media enabled me to achieve the dark recesses needed in the mouth. The 2 different pieces allowed me to compare directly to see which was more effect and personally, I think the previous use of brusho held more impact.
After the detailed drawing of my octopus, I decided to try use a more adventerous media in creating an abstract piece. I was very happy with the outcome of this as the brusho created soft shading while also allowing a constrast to both darker and brighter colours.
As my induction to the course came to an end, I started to explore different topics. While being interested in sealife and the intricate shapes presented, after starting a pencil drawing of an octopus I decided that the detail required was too time consuming.
Another etching.
After using pencil since the beginning of the course,  I decided to try and begin experimenting with different medias. This was an etching I did that incorporated own photos (the chain), art history (Escher + Picasso) and a secondary source (newspaper). Etching enabled me to achieve an effective shadow on the chains.
This was another object piece. It is unfinished yet I feel it shows how I have used pencil to create shadows and also, started to incorporate different medias. Personally, I felt this piece wasn't interesting enough as it lacked impact.
My final art history, this time looking as Escher. I decided to try and involve some political viewpoint into my work as a follow on from my previous piece. I picked university fees as it was relevant to both me and the time. The biro drawing allowed detail in the follow but still, showed the background through the design. I did a flower as it can represent 'new life' and 'new beginnings' however when this comes to uni's, little people can afford the 'new beginning'.
This is copy of Matisse. I liked this as it had a political meaning and would produce a reaction from people. I added some rope in the background as it allowed me to further my use in pencil while adding to the sinister tone of the overall piece.
This time I did a copy of art history however manipulated it to suit my own style better. I took my favourites elements of De Chirico's work and re-styled them to try create a more original drawing. After my first piece I decided to try achieve darker tones in my work. I think the tesselation shows this well.
This was my first piece of AS-Level and the task was to design an intwining drawing featuing everyday objects. I felt this was achieved as the headphone flowed well into the fork however using pencil didn't allow the dark recessess I felt were needed for an effective piece.
